In Memory of Valerio Longoria - We Will Miss You
December 27, 1924 - December 15, 2000
I had the opportunity to talk to Valerio one-on-one concerning music, the accordion, and the realities of being a musician. He was so eager to share that I recorded our conversation. His words to me indeed showed me what a wonderful person he was. Not only will he be remembered as a true Conjunto Pioneer, but a genuine down to earth gentle and kind man. One of the many things he said to me was to make sure to tell the young generation that are interested in being musicians to stay in school. "Que acaben la escuela para que tengan un vida mejor." "Finish school so that you can have a better life." This is a picture of his accordion on his front porch at 350 Rosebud in South San Antonio.
Gilbert Reyes and Valerio Longoria at his house in San Antonio, Texas. Valerio was a true legend and genius in his own right. He introduced to the world a unique style and sound all his own. Gilbert is playing a Hohner three row button accordion that was customized by Valerio.
