Tina y Los Gallitos

By listening to their music, a music
fan could not determine the age or the years together
as a group. However, Tina y Los Gallitos is not your
everyday musical group. Their age, talent and musical
chemistry together make them a musical prodigy. The
core of the Conjunto is the three family members.
Robert, Tina, and John Vega are the foundation of
Tina y Los Gallitos.
Robert Vega is 19 years of age and plays
accordion and sings second voice. Tina Vega is 18
years of age and plays bajo sexto and sings lead vocals.
She is one of the few female bajo players in the industry.
She was recently nominated for the TTMA Industry Awards
along with Lee Villareal and Ernie Salgado. The youngest
member of the band is John, who is presently 14 years
of age. John Vega plays bass and sings back up vocals.
Robert and Tina began learning to play their respective
instruments at the age of nine. John started learning
to play at the early age of six years. It was his
sister Tina that taught him to play bass. The newest
addition to 'The Youngest Conjunto', is 16 year old
cousin, Priscilla Tamayo on drums. With Robert as
her teacher, she has advanced rapidly during the short
time that she has been with the group.
All the children of the Familia Vega
were born in the greater Houston area. Their parents
made the decision to home school their children in
order that they could pursue a musical career as a
group. This advantage allows the family more time
to practice together and to go on the road when necessary.
Their musical influences are Tony De la
Rosa, Ramon Ayala, Flaco Jimenez, Los Tigres Del Norte,
and Jaime Y Los Chamacos. Tina Y Los Gallitos began playing
professionally in the fall of 1999. They have performed
at many private family functions, Mexican rodeos, and
public dances. San Antonio, Wharton, Beasley, Dallas,
Harlingen, and Austin are some of the cities that the
group has traveled to perform. In November 2002 the group
was invited to perform at the Fiesta Houston Concert opening
for Ramon Ayala, Fito Olivares, and David Lee Garza y
Los Musicales. The talented young conjunto has been privileged
to open up for Conjunto Oro, Los Dos Gilbertos, Jennifer
Pena, Los Texas Wranglers, Linda Escobar, and The Hometown
Boys.
In 2003, the family has been busy performing
for the Houston Chronicle Go Tejanothon, the Houston International
Festival, Fiesta Houston 2003, Bill Heard Memorial Day
Fest, Budweiser's Tu Musica En La Plaza, the Pasadena
Strawberry Fest, and the 2003 State Fair of Texas. In
2004, they performed at the Tejano/Conjunto Festival in
San Antonio. Tina y Los Gallitos were also invited to
perform in the 6th Annual South Texas Conjunto Association
Awards. Tina was awarded the 'Young Conjunto Bajo Sexto
Player of the Year' at the STCA Awards. The Young Conjunto
has also participated in the 2nd Annual Tardeada en el
Bario in San Antonio, the Viva Seguin Conjunto Festival,
and the 25th Annual Festival Chicano. The family will
be at this years "El Veterano" Conjunto Festival.
Their goals are to sign with a record label
and get an album out to the market. Tina y Los Gallitos
also plan to finish their home schooling, become full
time musicians and tour the USA and Mexico. For more info
