American Roots - 1930's Tex Mex, Early Country & Americana - Epic Arts Studio Berkeley, CA- May 26, 2006

Pete Hernandez, Jeff Hobbs, Tara Linda, Chris Strachwitz (Arhoolie Records), Gilbert Reyes

At Epic Arts Tea House in Berkeley, 5/26, Sombra de La Luna played a show made special by an enthusiastic audience, and special guests. Billed as “Moonshadow: American Roots~ Early Tex-Mex, Country, & Americana” all were invited to enjoy the similarities between the 3 diverse acts (Denise Funari- country folk), Sombra (early Tex-Mex), and Jason Kleinberg (Americana), and to listen to the same instruments played in three unique styles. It was a party!

When you mention Joel Guzman, these words come to mind: talented, creative, inspiring, and down to earth. Joel is one of the most articulate, lightning fast, the Charlie Parker of the accordion world musician, the Tex-Mex accordion scene has ever produced. He is truly on of the nicest individuals you will ever meet. For all of the God given talent Joel has, he is focused on what is real, familia. He is currently working on a project that will assist kids in learning about the accordion, its history, and how it has developed as an integral part of the Latino culture. Joel has played with some of the most talented maestros of the conjunto scene such as Tony De La Rosa, Amadeo Flores, Valerio Longoria, and many more. He has also performed with Los Lobos, Joe Ely, and many other well known groups.

Santiago Jimenez Jr (El Chief)

Santiago Jimenez Jr. indeed carries on his father’s tradition. It was touching to see this maestro choke-up whenever he would speak, or sing songs, of his father the late Santiago Jimenez Sr. What you get with Santiago Jimenez Jr. is the real deal. The audience in Sacramento gravitated towards him since he touched each and every one of them with his music. Santiago is not pretentious. He does not play his heart out to please other musicians. He gives all to his audience. One lady came up to me and stated that she felt every single note that Santiago played in her heart. Many musicians can play, but few with the heart and soul as Santiago Jimenez Jr. He is a simple kind hearted man with the soul and heart of a giant. It is rare to find people who can transcend their spirit with the music and touch people. By observing Santiago I have learned a valuable lesson. It is not about trying to out do the next accordion player with technique, but playing each and every song and note with your heart and soul. Two or three notes on the accordion with feeling can move mountains, than a handful of technique without soul. I was truly amazed and moved on how he touched and captivated his audience. Pictures of the Sacramento event will be posted shortly under Festivals. Click here for Chief Records, Santiago Jimenez Jr's record label.

In 1975 when I was 13 years of age, two guys whom we called at the time since we were sheltered from the rest of the world, "los hippies," and I don't mean this in a pejorative way, came to our humble house to do a documentary on South Texas. Later I learned that it was no other than Chris Strachwitz. The documentary he and Les Blank filmed was "Chulas Fronteras." Chris has done a remarkable job in documenting the history of our music and players involved in making it such as Los Alegres De Teran, Lydia Mendoza, Narciso Martinez, and Santiago Jimenez just to name a few.
