Joel
Guzman and Sarah Fox put their bilingual and multimusical
styles to the forefront in their debut album as a duo. The
husband/wife team have performed with Los Super Seven, Little
Joe y La Familia, and Ruben Ramos. Their own style brings
in jazz and classical influences, as well as tejano and norteño
flavors, resulting in classy originals such as “Amorique”
and “Padre Prays for Rain.” Not all the self-penned tunes
reach that level or creativity, but there are enough gems
in the bunch (plus a great cover of “Pajarrillo Barranqueño”)
to mark this as an excellent first album and Aztex as artists
to keep your eye on.

“Polkas, Gritos y Acordeónes” is
the aptly-titled new CD which features three of Tejano music’s
most accomplished and acclaimed acordeonistas: David Lee Garza
(from Los Musicales fame), Joel Guzmán (who played and
recorded with Little Joe, Ram Herrera, and a virtual list of
who’s who in Tejano music), and Sunny Sauceda (de Grupo Vida,
the young gun of the group). Produced
by Joel Guzmán for Guzmán Fox Records, and recorded
at Gilbert Velasquez’ V Music Studio in San Antonio, Texas
in a rapid-fire three-day session in July of 2004, this 10-cut
compilation of six classic instrumental medleys and melodies,
and four canciones rancheras, is a tribute to Tejano Americana
and some of conjunto music’s great accordionists, including
Narciso Martínez, Pedro Ayala, Paulino Bernal, Tony
de la Rosa, Esteban Jordán, and others. |
