Latin Pop and Beyond....
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Latin music crazes come and go in the U.S., riding
brief crests of crossover appeal and then fading out as the fickle pop culture
chases off after another cheap thrill. But in the current boom, there is a
difference that suggests a new potential for staying power. Very soon, Latinos
will become the nation’s largest minority and already in the music world
Latin voices are demanding to be heard in self-determined terms.
To the big time
music industry, of course, this new trend and demographic is something to
be manipulated. Yet, in the sweeping popularity of Ricky Martin and Jennifer
Lopez most of the hype is about selling "Latino" to the great white
mainstream. Appropriately and as always, the emphasis is on the exotic. Nothing
Latin can be sold without reminding the consumer that he or she is getting
something "hot" and "spicy." Beyond all the emphasis on
"caliente," there is really not much more to say. Authentic cultural
diversity is still a long way from crossover.
Down below all the
glossy Latin hoopla, however, there is a rising tide of Latino musicians and
audiences who are intent on making sounds and scenes that speak to their cultural
difference. Neither exclusive nor insular, they nonetheless want values, heroes,
art, and vision that reflect the complexity of the world they know. From all
across the map of Latin popular music, here are just a few old and new voices
creating music for crazes yet to come.
